The Math Experience
Program overview:
Spotlight: Seventh Grade Honors Algebra I
This seventh grade Honors Algebra I project allowed students to use Desmos, an online graphing calculator, and their knowledge of the parabolic, square root, and cube root functions — and the related graphs — to create images. While students had to meet some basic criteria to fulfill the assignment, they were encouraged to use personal knowledge and the open code resources of Desmos to be as creative as possible. Take a scroll through some of the amazing works that emerged from this assignment!
Lower School Math Program
Focusing on numbers, operations, shapes and relationships, Lower School mathematics uses an intentional and systematic approach introduces our young mathematicians to new skills. Hands-on activities build understanding as our students progress toward abstract and complex problem-solving.

Building on the foundations our students established in Lower School, Middle School math focuses on algebra and geometry, with an emphasis on algebraic reasoning, complex operations, and higher-level thinking. Students are placed in levels and sections through careful consideration and evaluation.
Student Perspectives

While grades are important, learning is a journey that doesn’t always follow a perfect, linear path. It occurs best when we are challenged, make mistakes, and learn from them.

At the Foote School, I’ve learned so much through the math program and have grown as a mathematician. I consider myself a careful worker and a deep problem solver, and I think I’ve grown significantly thanks to the challenging material my teachers have provided, always meeting my needs and supporting my progress.

I really appreciate the opportunity to work on tasks that challenge me and meet me where I am in terms of understanding the material. I believe it's beneficial that teachers and students work together to find the right level of challenge, with teachers providing assignments tailored to each student's abilities and needs.
