Foote's homegrown character education initiative is developing a new generation of ethical leaders.
The Buddy Program pairs younger students with older ones for shared reading time, community service, art projects and outdoor play. Kindergartners are paired with ninth graders, first graders with eighth graders and so on. The program builds friendship and community, and genuine affection between buddies which lasts for years. Younger students love learning from and sharing with their big buddies, and older students gain valuable experience as role models and mentors. The program reinforces our belief that every child, regardless of age, is a teacher as well as a student.
Being a ninth grade buddy to a Kindergartener is such a heartwarming experience. You visit their class and get to see their eyes light up and while you’re running around the playground with them, you can’t help but feel honored to be a role model and help start their first year at Foote off right.

A highlight of the Lower School experience is the Buddy Program, which pairs younger students with older ones for lunches, reading and friendship activities.
