Third Grade

Third graders do a deep dive into 19th-century New England, with a focus on Connecticut through different perspectives, and explore the question: “What does it mean to be a leader?” This question frames the school year as they research leaders from an array of backgrounds and experiences and develop an understanding of how to effect change.

Third Grade Curriculum

Language arts classes explore novels and literature from a variety of historical and cultural sources and the children read biographies of leaders through history. Third grade is also the first year for homework — a milestone for many students. Science, math and technology classes introduce students to design thinking, new mathematical expressions, inventions, and animal habitats. After their introduction and exposure to Spanish and Chinese in grades K–3, third graders get to choose between the two, embarking on an exciting cultural and linguistic journey.

What Does Leadership Look Like?

We ask all of our students this question as we help them recognize the many forms leadership can take. In music classes, for example, students learn through singing, playing, and moving, and they become confident performers as they sing at assemblies and dance for our May Day celebration.

Caring for Our Community

In addition to a rigorous and rich academic curriculum, all Foote students take part in service learning and other activities that connect them with the community at large. Third graders lead a community-wide collection of diapers on behalf of the Diaper Bank enhancing their understanding of socio-economic diversity and empathy. Third graders also take the lead in caring for and feeding our campus chickens; they collect and sell the eggs, with proceeds going back into the care for the chickens.
