Sixth Grade
The central theme of sixth grade is “journeys.” At the core of the curriculum is the idea that people’s connections to places are the result of many factors. Sixth graders study world cultures through the lenses of religion, geography, history, music and arts.
Sixth Grade Curriculum
At the beginning of the year, students spin the globe to determine which country they will spend the year researching. In May, their research comes to life in a Festival of the World, where the entire community is invited to celebrate the diverse lands, people, and cultures around the world.
A comprehensive biology curriculum invites students on a different journey to investigate cells, explore the unity and diversity of life through the study of ecosystems around the world and understand inheritance through a study of genetics.
In every subject, students are encouraged to expand their thinking—through complex mathematical operations, conversational nuances in their modern language classes, and discussions with advisors and peers.
Competitive Sports
Starting in sixth grade, all students have the opportunity to join interscholastic sports teams in the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Teams include soccer, field hockey, basketball, squash, swimming, volleyball, fitness, rock-climbing, Ultimate Frisbee, lacrosse, baseball, and softball — and we're adding more every year!
Extracurricular Music Opportunities
In sixth through ninth grade, students can choose to participate in Chorus, String Ensemble (4—9) and/or Jazz Rock Ensemble.
Private, fee-based music instruction is also available. Teaching artists from the greater New Haven community provide weekly individual instruction through the After School Program (ASP). Current offerings include guitar, piano, violin, cello, drums, and flute. Optional recitals are held at the end of the school year.
Cultures Across the Curriculum
During the first week of school, each student finds out the country they will study as part of a year-long Humanities research project. These cultural studies carry over into art classes, where students engage in explorations of influential artists and art-making skills from around the globe; drama, where students perform their own versions of fairytales and lore from around the world; and music classes focused on world music. These projects and performances culminate in an annual community celebration: Festival of the World.
Spanish + Math
Students integrate math and language skills as they explore their likes and dislikes presenting pie charts and graphs. Through these authentic activities, sixth graders develop greater proficiency in the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
