Seventh Grade
Seventh graders delve deeply into abstract thinking and complex topics.
Seventh Grade Curriculum
Seventh-grade Humanities students explore the theme of “change” as it pertains to history, literature and themselves. Looking at what happens when different cultures meet, students explore the early American experience through the lenses of Native Americans, Europeans and Africans.
In other classes, students delve deeper into abstract thinking and complex topics. Algebra is at the heart of math classes. In science, students build generators powered by the wind, and design, build, and launch rockets to test principles of aerodynamics and pressure.
The introduction of Latin, the Middle School play and a spectacular penciled self-portrait add artistic and cultural texture to the year.
Extracurricular Music Opportunities
In sixth through ninth grade, students can choose to participate in Chorus, String Ensemble (4—9) and/or Jazz Rock Ensemble.
Private, fee-based music instruction is also available. Teaching artists from the greater New Haven community provide weekly individual instruction through the After School Program (ASP). Current offerings include guitar, piano, violin, cello, drums, and flute. Optional recitals are held at the end of the school year.
Competitive Sports
Starting in sixth grade, all students have the opportunity to join interscholastic sports teams in the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Teams include soccer, field hockey, basketball, squash, swimming, volleyball, fitness, rock-climbing, Ultimate Frisbee, lacrosse, baseball, and softball — and we're adding more every year!
Witnesses to History
One of the highlights of seventh grade is the Witness Stones Project. Seventh graders partner with local historians to examine the personal stories of individuals who were enslaved in Connecticut. The project culminates with the students leading a community event to lay a stone of honor and recognition at the residence of the enslaved person. This is just one project in the scope of the Humanities class that focuses on exploring early American history and beginning to understand how identity shapes experience and the history that is told.
Applied Science
In the spring, seventh graders design and build interactive circuits — then invite fifth graders to test them out. (Fifth graders study electric circuits in their science class.) Among recent homemade creations were: controllers for video games, buzzers for trivia contests, unique musical instruments, and even a dance pad for their version of Dance Dance Revolution. Many used their knowledge of Scratch (basic programming language Foote students learn in Lower School technology) to design games and experiences that could be controlled using their circuits.
Spotlight: 7th Grade Honors Algebra I
This seventh grade Honors Algebra I project allowed students to use Desmos, an online graphing calculator, and their knowledge of the parabolic, square root, and cube root functions — and the related graphs — to create images. While students had to meet some basic criteria to fulfill the assignment, they were encouraged to use personal knowledge and the open code resources of Desmos to be as creative as possible. Take a scroll through some of the amazing works that emerged from this assignment!
