Ninth Grade

9th grade biology

Ninth grade is a year of powerful shared experiences. The high school course load is rigorous and enriching while multiple travel opportunities promote team-building and push students’ personal limits. Our ninth graders are confident leaders who set the tone for the school leading weekly meetings and other public speaking opportunities.

A Year in Ninth Grade

Ninth Grade Curriculum

The year begins with a three-day class trip to Cape Cod. Through biking, hiking and other outdoor activities, they begin to form the tight bonds that will unite them through the year.

Their high school Humanities course focuses on cultures and conflict; an English course delves into contemporary literature and writing; the biology course is a chance to dig into field studies; and students engage in advanced studies of modern language and Latin.

The arts continue to play a major role in the ninth grade year, with a continuation of Caribbean steel pans and sophisticated techniques in visual arts. In the winter, the entire class prepares and performs a play in which every student has a role on stage or behind the scenes, and in the spring they host the annual Poetry Cabaret. At the heart of the 9th grade year is the opportunity to travel overseas and engage in service work, immerse themselves in a foreign language, and make deep curricular connections.

Extracurricular Music Opportunities

In sixth through ninth grade, students can choose to participate in Chorus, String Ensemble (4—9) and/or Jazz Rock Ensemble.

Private, fee-based music instruction is also available. Teaching artists from the greater New Haven community provide weekly individual instruction through the After School Program (ASP). Current offerings include guitar, piano, violin, cello, drums, and flute. Optional recitals are held at the end of the school year.

Competitive Sports

Starting in sixth grade, all students have the opportunity to join interscholastic sports teams in the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Teams include soccer, field hockey, basketball, squash, swimming, volleyball, fitness, rock-climbing, Ultimate Frisbee, lacrosse, baseball, and softball — and we're adding more every year!

International Travel

China trip

More than just tradition, travel is an essential and intentional part of the Foote experience. Ninth graders travel internationally each spring to engage in service work, immerse themselves in another language, and make deep connections with their curriculum. When they return, they reflect on their travels, sharing their experiences and takeaways through blogs and public speaking opportunities.

College-Level Computer Science

Foote technology class

Once students complete this introductory Computer Science course at Foote, they will have learned material equivalent to a semester of college-level computer science and will be able to program in Python. Students who move quickly through the introductory curriculum will have the opportunity to study AI, including multiple approaches to creating AI players in games and training chatbots.
