First Grade
First graders are enthusiastic learners and energetic explorers who thrive on hands-on experiences. They are becoming more independent, while building foundational skills in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.
First-Grade Favorites
Some of our first-graders' favorite hands-on projects are:
-
Creating tabletop aquatic habitats, making predictions about how organisms like fish, snails, and bloodworms will behave and interact, then observe and record their discoveries in science notebooks.
-
Discovering the properties of solids and liquids through numerous tactile investigations.
-
Studying air and weather, building various air-catching devices (such as parachutes and helicopters) and observing cloud structures, noting how certain clouds correlate with certain weather patterns.
Curriculum Connections: Spanish & Social Studies
In first grade Spanish, students continue exploring both thematic units — All About Me and My World and the World Around Me — building upon the foundational concepts introduced in kindergarten. First graders are introduced to simple, engaging stories that not only reinforce language patterns and the musicality of Spanish but also serve as a gateway to cultural exploration.
Foote Facts:
Foote is one of the only schools in the area — public or private — to offer language classes in every grade (K–9). Language offerings include Spanish, Chinese, and Latin.
In addition, every grade includes theater, art, library, and P.E. classes — with double periods dedicated to art, allowing students ample time to focus on their projects in each class.
First Grade Curriculum
First graders' social awareness expands as they investigate themes of identity, stereotypes, and culture. Their educational journey is enriched by outdoor learning periods, and classes in Spanish, music, drama, library, physical education, and art, all of which contribute to a well-rounded learning experience beyond the traditional classroom setting.
