Fifth Grade

fifth grade classroom

Fifth graders continue to explore many academic areas with a sense of joy and purpose, while also taking on more independence and responsibility in their work.

Fifth Grade Curriculum

As the oldest students in Lower School, fifth graders take on many leadership roles both in and out of the classroom. Grade 5 students serve as the hosts of weekly morning meetings for the entire Lower School, they are older buddies to third-grade students, and they also practice stewardship by managing the campus-wide recycling program. A highlight of the fifth grade program is an overnight trip to an outdoor education center in Lakeside, CT, which reinforces core curricular themes of community and ecology.

Art Across the Curriculum

Egyptian terracotta

The fifth grade art curriculum supplements the students' studies in science and social studies: As part of their Egyptian studies, students craft Canopic Vessels using terracotta clay. The class explores Fiber Arts, drawing inspiration from Maya culture, and works with reclaimed materials, such as turning dried markers into liquid watercolors, to highlight their role as campus recyclers. To conclude the year, students paint larger-than-life native Northeastern flowers in the style of Georgia O'Keeffe, linking their artwork to their science unit on invasive species in Connecticut.

STEM at Work

technology class

In Technology classes, students engage in an in-depth robotics and coding unit using VEX Robotics and the corresponding software for the robotics kits. Students also engage in STEM/design projects that focus on basic engineering and technological principles and incorporate the use of science and/or math including the design and construction of earthquake simulators and earthquake resistant towers.
