March is National Reading Month. As part of the celebration, we asked our faculty members share some of their favorite books:
The Napping House by Audrey and Dan Wood

This is a great book to read to students aloud in class before naptime or at home before bedtime. “A wakeful flea atop a number of sleeping creatures including a snoring grandma, a dozing dog and snoozing cat causes a commotion, with just one bite.” The Napping House is available in our library.
Horse: A Novel by Geraldine Brooks
Favorite of Susan Keegan, Kindergarten Teacher
Pulitzer Prize winner Geraldine Brooks, who wrote Caleb’s Crossing, tells the story of thoroughbred Lexington and the two African American jockeys who help win races for their white slave owners.
The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
Favorite of Cara Hames, Head of Lower School
Twelve-year-old orphan Hugo repairs clocks at a Paris train station in 1931, when he meets a toy seller and his goddaughter which jeopardizes his biggest secret. The main story is inspired by French filmmaker Georges Méliès. The Invention of Hugo Cabret is available in our library.
The Little Island by Margaret Wise Brown
Favorite of Anna Collins, Librarian
The Little Island tells the story of the change of seasons on a tiny island and how they affect the plant and animal life there. The Little Island is available in our library.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Favorite of Margy Lamere, Grade 1 Teacher
The mysteries of a locked garden are unveiled when 10-year-old Mary moves to a lonely house in the moors of Yorkshire with her invalid cousin. The Secret Garden is available in our library.
Wonder by R.J. Palacio
Favorite of Aléwa Cooper, Head of School

The Roald Dahl Treasury by Roald Dahl
Favorite of Ross Holzschuh, Lower School Associate
An anthology of previously unpublished work,The Roald Dahl Treasury inclues Christmas cards, personal letters, and songs created by the same author as The BFG, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Students, faculty, staff, and members of the Foote School community can take part in National Reading month, too! Visit our library, which contains over 48,000 printed volumes and is maintained by three full-time librarians.
