Goodbye New Haven, Hello PR!
Puerto Rico Day 1

We left New Haven a bit early. With a 2 a.m. departure, we were tired, but excited as we rolled into the airport, eager as we approached the Island of Puerto Rico. As is the tradition, the majority of the passengers, including our ninth grade, clapped when they landed.

Puerto Rico Day 1

Deplaning in San Juan, we were excited to see Foote alumna Chase Gore-Grimes and her parents as we picked up bags and met our enthusiastic and knowledgable team leaders, Meredith and Hectmar from the World Leadership School.

Understanding the very hungry and tired teens and their fatigued teachers, they us directly to lunch — an authentic roadside Puerto Rican quiosco. We chose from a vast array of rice and beans, lechón asado, pastelillos and a dizzying array of smoothies made from fresh mango, pineapple, papaya, banana, and coconuts. Delicious!

Then we made our way to APRODEC (the former United States Roosevelt Naval Station) where we met the director, Manuel, who is working to reclaim this beautiful area — with its ocean views and abundant wildlife like turtles, dolphins, and lizards — and transform it into a community integrated eco-business system that supports and includes the local community in the development. We will be working with Manuel on projects that further these goals. We are so excited to be a part of this.
