Forts, Fountains, and Fond Farewells
Puerto Rico Day 6

Leaving APRODEC was an emotional and meaningful experience. The deeply touching closing ceremony led by Don Justino reminded us of the importance of being part of something that is bigger than we are.

Students left handprints on the freshly painted wall and we took group photos in front of the projects we had completed. After some heartfelt goodbyes, we headed to old San Juan.

We enjoyed three more docent presentations: in Plaza de Colón we heard about the city; in El Fuerte San Cristobal we learned about its architectural genius and its effectiveness in keeping pirates and enemy empires at bay; and at San Felipe del Morro we heard a dramatic tale of love, loss, and life.

After a fantastic authentic lunch in an art gallery, students had an opportunity to explore a portion of the old city in small groups. Hot, tired, and happy, we moved to the Del Mar Eco Lodge — a sheltered collection of small and unique rooms set in a tropical garden — with a pool! What a fantastic way to end the day.
