Bioluminescent Bay, El Yunque, Hooray!
Puerto Rico Day 5

We started the day by meeting up with our fantastic tour guide, Rafael. He took us to El Yunque National Forest where we rode to the highest point,(Yokahú tower), and had a fantastic view of the mountains of the jungle and a huge portion of the coastline of Puerto Rico. Looking out toward the sea, we could see where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean Sea.

Rafael then took us on a hike to a beautiful spot on the river where we had an opportunity to swim, paint with river stones, and identify interesting flora and fauna. From there, we had lunch at a local bakery, followed by our first beach outing at a warm, calm waterfront locale in a private, palm-lined residential community.

Next we headed to Laguna Grande where, after a thorough safety training, we paddled through the canals of a mangrove forest in the fading light. When we arrived at a lagoon, the sky was aglow with millions of stars which we could see very clearly. Then we noticed that when we splashed the water, it was also aglow — we would splash water in and around our boat and it would emanate “sparks” of bioluminescence.

After a well deserved dinner, we happily headed back to APRODEC and settled in for one more night before we head off to new territories tomorrow.
