Carol Maoz will depart on June 30, 2020 after 11 remarkable years as Head of School at Foote. Below is her farewell note to parents, as well as a video of Foote milestones during her tenure.
I find myself writing my final letter amidst tremendous uncertainty and civil unrest. While this makes me feel sad, angry and unsettled, today I choose to be hopeful. I am hopeful because I believe that our children are being taught to think independently, to question, to understand the roots of racism and prejudice, and to appreciate diversity.
They are learning from the time they are 5 years old that a single person can make a difference and that each of us has the responsibility to do so. In the words of Mother Teresa, "I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples."
As a school we are teaching children what it means to respect all people, to behave with integrity and to have compassion and empathy. From the day I started my career in education to today, I have been guided and inspired by the belief that we can make a difference by educating the next generation to make this a kinder, safer and more just world. I choose hope.
And I choose gratitude. There are so many people to thank as my time at Foote comes to a close. I have had the honor of working with some of the most dedicated and caring teachers I have known. The ways in which they understand and support children and families is extraordinary.
I have also learned from you as we have embarked on this journey together. The Foote parent body makes our school a community and I want to make special mention of our parent volunteers, specifically those who have devoted their time, energy and resources through the PTC and other avenues. I have so enjoyed getting to know you through our work together.
My final thank you goes to our children—our wonderful, thoughtful, loving children—who make every day new and interesting and fun. They inspire me every day; I will miss them terribly.
Thank you, families, for your kind words and support over the last 11 years. They have been great ones!
Stay healthy and safe—and hopeful.
