All parents are invited to a special parent workshop hosted by Foote's Diversity & Inclusion Parent Affinity Group.

"Raising Children to Have a Healthy Racial-Ethnic Identity"
featuring Dr. Sandra (Chap) Chapman

Friday, February 1
8:10 – 9:30 a.m.
Twichell Room

Dr. Chapman is Director of Equity and Community at Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School, a progressive independent school in Manhattan. She has also worked with Foote School teachers on developing a diverse and inclusive curriculum.

About the Talk

Young children receive daily messages about race, ethnicity, skin color, gender, family structure, class and ability. When these messages are affirming, they aid in the development of a healthy sense of self. However, negative messages about children's identity are also absorbed through explicit and implicit means.

How can parents and caregivers help preschool and elementary age children know themselves well, and love themselves even more? Chap explores children's development of difference, with a deep understanding of the development of racial-ethnic identity.
