Middle school can be a fraught time for body image. The COVID-19 pandemic—with its added stress, isolation and increased reliance on social media—has contributed to an alarming rise in dieting, obsessive exercise and eating disorders among tweens and teens. Virginia Sole-Smith, author of The Eating Instinct: Food Culture, Body Image and Guilt in America, will discuss this phenomenon, as well as the latest research on how kids learn body anxiety and fatphobia at home, school, and in our broader culture. And she'll offer evidence-based advice for parents and educators on how we can work together to create a more weight-inclusive culture and raise happy, healthy kids at every size.
