Earth is special
Lots of nature around us!
Animals, birds all around us
Lots of trees and stuff that’s helpful
And stuff to eat
Thus begins a poem collaboratively written for Earth Day by three Kindergartners in Alexandra Wittner and Lynne Banta's class. (Read on for the full poem). Though separated by physical distance, Foote students gathered in spirit on the same beautiful planet to mark the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22.
Guided by an exhaustive list of ways to celebrate the day generated by Foote faculty and staff, students wrote original poetry, left inspirational quotes for neighbors, investigated insects, played outside, planted seeds and composted food scraps for gardens yet to be planted.
Here's a snapshot of parent-submitted Earth Day photos, along with the Kindergarten poem in full:
A fourth grader gardening in his yard
Two brothers (Grades 7 and 4) enjoying a tranquil exploration in their neighborhood.
A fourth grader with a woolly bear caterpillar she found (and set free) in her yard
A fifth grader composting food scraps as part of an Earth Day science assignment to do something that is helpful for the environment
Two sisters, Grades 5 and 2, took to the sidewalk with chalk in one hand and a list of quotations paying homage to the Earth in the other. Together, they wrote chalk quotations on eight front stoops on their block.
A Kindergartner and her fourth grade brother decorated their driveway with messages in celebration of Planet Earth!
"Happy Earth Day"
By three K-1 friends
Earth is special
Lots of nature around us!
Animals, birds all around us
Lots of trees and stuff that’s helpful
And stuff to eat
There are plants
Feathers and sticks
Worms
Full of surprises
There are buildings
Everywhere
Kindness
Earth is kind
Helpfulness
Water helps us
Earth helps us
when we need help
The world is where we live
People living in every block
People helping other people who do not have stuff
Please do not litter
Earth is kind to us
We need to be kind to the earth
Earth is happy!
Earth is our home!
