So Good to See You!

So Good to See You!

By Meredith Andrews

If you have walked through the main hallway lately, you have probably noticed the 42 big-eyed faces welcoming you back on campus from their place on the wall. These lovable lookers were created by the first graders. This has been a fall project for this age group for more than 25 years here at Foote! The lesson was brought to our community by Polly Fiddler, a beloved Art Teacher who taught at Foote from 1980 to 2010.

This project is a wonderful way to start the first-grade art year, since it involves so many skills (drawing, painting, cutting and gluing) but what makes it endure is the creative freedom that is built into the prompt. Make something with eyes as big as two paper plates: A simple concept that enables imaginations to run wild from there. It is exciting to work on such a big scale and also to paint on the first day of art class!

Polly Fiddler passed away on June 11, 2024. She will be honored during Arts Night this year (November, 5th from 5–7 p.m.) when a new sculpture will be dedicated to the school in her name by another former Art Teacher, Karla Matheny, and Karla's husband Mark Landow.

Come take a look at the faces in the hallway and mark your calendars to join us for Arts Night.
