SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR 2010-2011 First Day of School will be September 1 In looking ahead at the 2010-2011 School Calendar, a couple of important issues have come to light. They are: a) the number of school days, based on the current calendar and b) the date on which the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah falls in 2010. Number of School Days: Next year, Labor Day once again falls late (Sept. 6). If we keep to our current calendar, it will be difficult to have the appropriate number of school days. Rosh Hashanah: The holiday falls on Thurs., Sept. 9, 2010. If we keep to our current calendar, students would begin the school year on Wednesday, be out of school Thursday, and return on Friday. This schedule does not support children settling in well to school and would make it difficult for teachers to establish their school routine. For our Middle School students, Project Week and the ninth grade trip to Cape Cod would be negatively impacted. For these reasons, the first day of school next year will be Wed., Sept. 1. That's the Wednesday before Labor Day. We hope that communicating this change for the 2010-2011 school year in advance will help in your planning. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Carol Maoz. WE WISH COLLEEN MURPHY WELL ON HER MATERNITY LEAVE BILL MANKE WILL BE TEACHING HER CLASSES Colleen begins her maternity leave this Friday. Bill Manke '91 will be taking over for her while she is out. As many of you know, Bill is assistant director of the After School Program, a Middle School advisor and an experienced Physical Education teacher who is already a part of our PE program.
NINTH GRADE COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT NEEDS ARTIFICIAL CHRSTMAS TREE On Monday, Dec. 14, ninth graders plan to set up and decorate an artificial tree for the residents of Columbus House Homeless Overflow Shelter. They desperately – and immediately – need a donated, gently used artificial tree to make this project work. If you have a tree to donate, please call Sheree DiMario at 203-314-0805 this evening or as soon as possible, and she will make arrangements to pick it up.
