Dear Parents,
Last week I had the opportunity to participate in this year's first meeting of the Multicultural Affairs Committee. Open to all, this committe's mission is to promote a school community diverse in economic, cultural, religious, ethnic and racial backgrounds as well as to provide a forum for discussing issues of diversity.
As teachers and parents gathered informally around tables in the Perrine Library, a vibrant discussion ensued in which everyone's voice was heard and respected. We discussed various definitions of diversity and the great work Foote has been doing in both increasing our numbers as well as in raising awareness through curriculum, programs, and day-to-day interactions. We have much to be proud of and at the same time, our school motto, Gladly will I learn and gladly teach, reflects our commitment to continue to work in this area.
We also discussed the committee's desire to broaden this group and encourage many more parents to participate. We hope to focus on both reinforcing what we have in common and learning more about and appreciating the richness in our differences. We brainstormed a number of ideas for consideration, including more cultural sharing, workshops on diversity and a set of evenings in which we would bring in a speaker with expertise in a particular field with an opportunity for discussion following the talk. We hope to have our first evening in January or February with the topic of diversity in family structures. I hope that you will join us in learning more about this relevant topic and hearing the thoughts and ideas in this wonderfully diverse school community.
The Multicultural Affairs Committee provides an important opportunity to connect with other members of the Foote community. Through conversations and reflections we brainstorm together about how we can best ensure an inclusive community as well as one in which tolerance and respect are part of its natural tapestry. I feel lucky to be a part of this group. Details on our next meeting and our first speaker event will be communicated through E-News and our Web site. We hope you will join us at both.
Best regards,

Carol Maoz
