Why does Foote ask parents and alumni for financial contributions? Giving to the school builds a strong community. Because Foote is an economically diverse community, we value contributions at every level. Taken together, these contributions reflect enormous support for the school.
Why must money be raised each year in addition to the tuition? Foote tuition covers just over 90 percent of the cost of educating a student. The Annual Fund – along with the income from the school’s endowment – bridges the gap between tuition income and the actual cost of operating the school.
Is this unique to Foote School? No, not at all. Colleges, universities and independent elementary and secondary schools have long asked families and graduates for support.
What is the Annual Fund? The Annual Fund is a tax-deductible opportunity to support your school. Starting on July 1 and ends on June 30 each year (not the calendar year!), the Annual Fund raises money that becomes part of the operating budget. It pays for:
- the books and computers in the Perrine Library
- the salary for your favorite teacher
- the cost of the field trips that make lessons come alive
- the microscopes in the science lab
- the soccer balls and lacrosse sticks
and much, much more!
All members of the Foote School community are encouraged to participate by contributing to the Annual Fund each year.
What is a matching gift? The company you work for may match your gift to a non-profit organization such as Foote, and you get credit for it! You must ask your employer for the form.
What is the endowment? Endowment funds are similar to savings accounts that generate income from the investment of the principal. For example, a gift to the Jean Lamont Scholarship is placed in the endowment, allowing it to grow and produce income. The principal is not touched. A gift to the endowment is NOT a gift to the Annual Fund.
What is capital giving? Periodically, the Board of Directors identifies projects that require large sums of money. Foote's current capital campaign is raising $12 million, part of which funded the purchase of 3.8 acres of contiguous property for a new regulation-sized playing field. We are continuing to raise the rest for the new Jonathan Milikowsky Science and Technology building for the middle school, named for Jon '88. The previous campaign raised money to add to the Hosley Gymnasium, build the Sandine Theater, and add new classrooms for art and music.
What is the difference between annual giving and capital and/or endowed giving? The Annual Fund is used for annual expenses. Capital and endowed funds are used for building and special projects. The Annual Fund helps us sustain our outstanding program. Capital funds help us grow.
