Frequently Asked Questions
and answers that may help you understand Foote’s giving programs:
Why does Foote ask parents and alumnae/i for financial contributions?
Giving to the school builds a strong community. Because Foote is an economically diverse community, we value contributions at every level.Taken together these contributions reflect enormous support for the school.
Why must money be raised each year in addition to the tuition?
Foote tuition covers just over 90% of the cost of educating a student. The Annual Fund and the income from the school’s endowment bridges the gap between tuition income and the actual cost of operating the school.
Is this unique to Foote School?
No, not at all. Colleges, universities and independent elementary and secondary schools have long asked families and graduates for support.
What is the Annual Fund?
It is a tax-deductible opportunity to support your school. The Annual Fund starts on July 1 and ends on June 30 each year (not the calendar year!).
All the money raised becomes part of the operating budget. That means it pays for:
• the books and computers in the library
• the salary for your favorite teacher
• the cost of the field trips that make lessons come alive
• the microscopes in the science lab
• the soccer balls and lacrosse sticks, and much, much more.
All members of the Foote School community are encouraged to participate by contributing to the Annual Fund each year.
What is a matching gift?
The company you work for may match your gift to a non-profit organization such as Foote. It is like free money. And you get credit for it! You must ask your employer for the form.
What is the endowment?
Endowment funds are like savings accounts that generate income from the investment of the principle. For example, a gift to the Jean Lamont Scholarship is put in the endowment so that it may grow and spin off more and more income as years pass. The principle is not touched. A gift to the endowment is NOT a gift to the Annual Fund.
What is capital giving?
Periodically, the Board of Directors identifies projects that require large sums of money. The most recent campaign raised money to add to the Hosley Gymnasium and build the Sandine Theater and the new classrooms for art and music.
What is the difference between annual giving and capital and/or endowed giving?
The Annual Fund is used for annual expenses. Capital and endowed are for building and special projects. The Annual Fund helps us live. Capital funds help us grow.
