Footebridge: Topic Study
Each summer, Footebridge focuses on a central topic to enrich the children's world knowledge and their language.
When food was the topic, we visited the New Haven Ecology project to study agriculture.
We made bread at a bakery where flour is milled.
We also made bread back in the classroom, talking about ingredients, texture, and the properties of yeast.
The children made their own croissants at a local French bakery.
When we studied buliding, we visited a neighborhood construction site and talked to the workers and the architect.
Following a trip to a local lumber yard, the children constructed a playhouse.
Before working on the house, the children learned how to use tools safely.
The children worked in supervised pairs and talked about tools, construction, and their observations.
The excitement grew as the house grew!
The final product became a playhouse, an office, and a school room.
When Footebridge studied fish, we began by establishing a 50-gallon tank for local fish speciments. Later we visited a fish market and the Norwalk Aquarium.
During recess, the children dug for worms to feed the fish.
The last week a father demonstrated his fishing techniques and then...
The children tried them out at Lighthouse Point.
