Kate Atkinson '77 featured in New York Times article on universal health care casuing strains in Massachusetts.

Once they discover that she is Dr. Kate, the supplicants line up to approach at dinner parties and ballet recitals. Surely, they suggest to Dr. Katherine J. Atkinson, a family physician here, she might find a way to move them up her lengthy waiting list for new patients.
Those fortunate enough to make it soon learn they face another long wait:
Dr. Atkinson’s next opening for a physical is not until early May — of 2009 .

So beings an atirlce about the unintended consequence of universal coverage, the imbalance is being exacerbated by the state’s new law requiring residents to have health insurance.

Since last year, when the landmark law took effect, about 340,000 of Massachusetts’ estimated 600,000 uninsured have gained coverage. Many are now searching for doctors and scheduling appointments for long-deferred care.

New Alumnae/i Directory In Progress

Many of you have told us that you'd like to get in touch with classmates and old friends or simply find out where they are now or what's happened to them. When you move to a new city, you often want to find out if any Foote alums are nearby. For all these reasons, we're moving forward with the first new directory since 1994.

We are working once again with Harris Direct. Harris does the research at no charge to Foote. They make their money by selling the directories. Foote does NOT get any of the proceeds. What Foote does get is updated, verified information on our alums – including many who have been "lost." (Many larger schools and nearly all colleges have staff members that do this full-time) That means we can keep in touch with you and you'll be able to keep in touch with each other.

Foote's Alumnae/i Office office is happy to provide, at no cost, the addresses of your classmates when you want to reach them. And since our ability to do that is supported by the Harris data collection, we came to the conclusion that it's worth the effort. If there are Foote people you would like to reach, please don't feel pressed to buy a directory, just get in touch with us!

You should know: Harris does not sell, rent, or otherwise share e-mails, addresses, phone numbers or any other information it gathers for schools and college.

We understand that a few people have been concerned about or annoyed with with calls from Harris and we apologize for this. We have conveyed that information to Harris and those alums will not be contacted again.

Why doesn't Foote have a password-protected on-line directory? We hope to in the future, but it's not a project we can afford, or handle in house, at the present time. Please bear with us.

The New York City Gathering
on October 24 at Kush Lounge was a great opportunity for alums from the 1970s through the 1990s to meet Interim Head of School Dary Dunham, and former Head Frank Perrine.
Those at the gathering enjoyed good conversation along with Kush's Moroccan-inspired cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. A big thanks to Mark Osborne ‘82 who hosted the event

Alums on Campus

Several alums are actively involved with Foote and others have recently been on campus to share their skills and talents. (FYI: Lisa Totman '56 is still teaching third grade and Jenny Byers '65 is still teaching French.) Here are some details:

Bruce Conklin '75 spent the morning of April 8, 2008 on campus talking to our 8th and 9th grade science students about his speciality - stem cell research. Based at University of California/San Francisco's Gladstone Lab.

Bruce, at right with science teachers John Cunningham and Leslie Long, was recently named to the “SciAm 50,” Scientific American magazine’s annual list of leaders in science and technology that appeared in its January 2008 issue. His pioneering work focuses on differentiating stem cells into specific tissue types through electrical pulses or chemicals transmitted via nanoscale silicon wires.

The students asked lots of questions and time ran out very fast. Clearly, Bruce inspired some future scientists.

John Isaacs '83 is coaching several sports at Foote. Here he is (in jacket holding ropes) helping students master the ropes course in the Sacred Woods.

John is married to Linda Garcia-Abrines Isaacs '83 and they live in Orange.

This photo appears in the current (Winter 2008) issue of Foote Prints. If you did not receive your copy, contact alum@footeschool.org.

Casey Neill '86 With his raspy voice, well crafted songs and a crack band, Casey Neill has carved out a widespread fan-base throughout the US, Canada, Japan, and Britain. On a tour of the Northeast, Casey stopped at Foote on November 14, 2007 (he played at Cafe 9 that night) to give a master class to several of our Middle School students. He also sang several songs to a rapt kindergarten class.

The students were interested in how long he has played guitar (since he was 10), how he approaches song writing, and the origins of his guitar (Ireland).

A new Casey Neill CD "Brooklyn Bridge" was released May 1st 2007 on the indie label In Music We Trust.

For more about Casey go to his website Casey Neill and the Norway Rats.

She currently manages real estate for her family in New Haven. She and her husband, Iain York, have three children, Zev, who is in MAG at Foote, four-year-old Malachai, and Levi, born this past fall.

John Daley '90
has been coaching boys sports at Foote since the mid-1990s. This fall he coached boys varsity soccer (left) and is now coaching boys JV basketball. He coaches the baseball team in the spring. John lives in Hamden with his wife and runs a baseball training facility, also in Hamden.

LEGACIES AT FOOTE

Currently, nearly 40 Foote School students have parents, grandparents, aunts or uncles who attended Foote. They are in nearly every grade, with six legacies in Kindergarten alone. Legacy students were featured at a November 2006 All School Assembly, with eighth grader Nick Lima doing the introductions. Nick's mother, Eleanor DeVane, graduated in 1978, his aunt Kate DeVane in 1982, and his uncle Will DeVane in 1984. His grandfather, Milton DeVane, is a member of the Class of 1942. Nick has graduated and is now at Exeter.

MAROON AND GREY – the family tradition continues. Legacy students are still assigned the same team – Maroon or Grey – that their parents, grandparents or siblings, or other relatives were on.
