Welcome to Foote School Summer Reading on the Web!
All students entering grades K through 6 have received a copy of the book chosen by the teachers of the next grade for the entire class to read, and purchased with the support of the Foote School PTC. Parents of students entering grades K through 3 should read the book aloud to their child. Parents of students entering grades 4 through 6 should read the book with their child - either reading it aloud or reading it simultaneously so they can discuss it. Either way, think of it as a small book club. This insures that the student will understand some of the difficult issues these characters, who sometimes live in a very different time or place, are facing in these stories. Reading this book (and hopefully others) together reinforces the message that the student's education is a responsibility shared by the school and the family, working together. Also some of the teachers will invite parents in to discuss the book with the class in September.
Please take a few minutes to read the letter for your child's grade.
Students entering grades 7 through 9 are not receiving a book this year. Instead they will choose from a list of books the teachers have selected for them. The choices were in an E-news letter sent out at the end of May, a copy of which is available below. The "choice" books will be available in our library, most public libraries, or as paperbacks in bookstores.
Please take a few minutes to read the letter for your child which explains the summer reading in more detail.
Students entering the fourth through ninth grades need to read additional books over the summer (as discussed in the summer letter). They will enter information about each book on their Summer Reading Log,which should then be signed at the end of the summer to verify its contents and given to the student's new teacher in September. (If the log has been lost, you can download a copy of the Reading Log for Grades 4-6 or Reading Log for Grades 7-9.) For help in choosing those additional books, we have posted lists of suggested books by grade.
The summer books for 2009 are:
Kindergarten: The Bee Tree by Patricia Polacco
MAG: Poppy by Avi
Grade 3: Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
Grade 4: The Landry News by Andrew Clements
Grade 5: The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi
Grade 6: The Watsons Go to Birmingham -- 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis
Students in grades four through nine have the opportunity to read and vote for a Nutmeg Book next January. For those students who are interested in getting a head start, here are the Nutmeg Book lists for fourth through sixth grades and for seventh through ninth grades.
(The letters, lists and logs will download in .pdf format and require Adobe Reader; if you need to download Adobe Reader, click here.)
Have a wonderful summer! Remember to set aside some time each day for reading! The Librarians
