The Foote School: Academic Programs

Welcome to Foote School Summer Reading on the Web!

All students entering grades K through 8 have received a copy of the book chosen by the teachers of the next grade for the entire class to read, and purchased with the support of the Foote School PTC. Parents of lower school students entering grades K through 4 should read the book aloud to their child. Parents of students entering grades 5 through 8 should read the book with their child - treating it like a small book club. This insures that the student will understand some of the difficult issues these characters, who sometimes live in a very different time or place, are facing in these stories. Reading this book (and perhaps others) together reinforces the message that the student's education is a responsibility shared by the school and the family, working together.

In keeping with the school's effort to save resources, we are providing a link here to a letter with more information particular to each grade. Please take a few minutes to read the letter for your child's grade.

The summer books for 2008 are:

Kindergarten: The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall
MAG: Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
Grade 3: Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
Grade 4City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau
Grade 5The Art of Keeping Cool by Janet Taylor Lisle
Grade 6: The Watsons Go to Birmingham -- 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis
Grade 7: Wabi: A Hero's Tale by Joseph Bruchac
Grade 8: Kipling's Choice by Geert Spillebeen

Students entering the fourth through ninth grades need to read at least three additional books over the summer. After finishing each book, the student is to enter information about each book read on their Summer Reading Log, which should then be signed at the end of the summer to verify its contents and given to the student's new teacher in September. (If the log has been lost, there is a PDF version available below.) For help in choosing those three or more books, we have posted lists of suggested books by grade below, also as PDFs. Children entering grades K through 3 also received a printed version of the same list with other summer reading materials in the mail.

Suggestions for Summer Reading, available by grade: Summer Reading Log for Grades 4-6 or Grades 7-9
(The lists and logs will download in .pdf format and require Adobe Reader; if you need to download Adobe Reader, click here.)

Have a wonderful summer!
Remember to set aside some time each day for reading!
