LEARNING SUPPORT PROGRAM

MISSION:

The Learning Support Program at the Foote School reflects its names by aiming to support students and teachers. We believe that all children can learn and do so in different ways and at different rates. We support all children in their learning, and we support all teachers in differentiating instruction to meet each child’s unique learning needs.

PROTOCOL:

The Program promotes student learning in a variety of ways. Each grade’s educational team has an LSP educator involved in the day-to-day activities of the grade. The Learning Specialists meet regularly with classroom teachers to discuss student learning and brainstorm ways to differentiate instruction to help specific children.

If the teacher and learning specialist have ongoing concerns about a child’s learning, they prepare an LSP referral together. This documents the learner’s strengths and weaknesses and explains attempted interventions. The educational team and the child’s parents meet to discuss this referral and make specific plans. These plans often include continued consultation with the child’s teacher, assessments and the possible implementation of support services. If the team deems it necessary, an outside evaluation will be recommended.
