Introduction

The Technology Department at The Foote School fills a dual role as both a technical services group and an educational department. Our responsibilities range from the maintenance and repair of more than 230 computers and seven servers, to assisting faculty members as they integrate technology into their curricula, to supporting students as they use technology in their class work as well as extra curricular activities. The entire campus is equipped with a network that provides both wired and wireless online connections. Our servers provide the following services:

Mission

Our mission is to provide a technologically rich and supportive learning environment that enables and encourages the confident, practical, and imaginative use of technology.

Our specific goals are to build and maintain a reliable, convenient, and useful campus-wide network and to create a community of users who can utilize the potential of information technology for teaching, learning, and administrative productivity.

Curriculum

Computer skills are introduced gradually and practiced throughout MAG through sixth grade. They are incorporated whenever possible into classroom curriculum projects.

From seventh through ninth grade, students have access to lab and library computers during study hall and recess. Middle School faculty often bring classes to the lab to give instruction in the computer component of a project and then expect students to continue work on projects independently. Students are always able to get help and instruction from IT personnel and librarians.

Students also collaborate on FooteSteps (the yearbook), and The Spi (the student newspaper) using the resources of the Computer Department.

Current Projects

A sampling of current projects underway:

Ninth Grade:

China Exchange Program / E- Pals: 9th Graders are currently using their Foote email accounts to correspond with the students of Yali Middle School in China, where they will visit in March. We have also hosted video conferences for the students, so they have been able to meet their "e-pals" face to face as well.

Sixth Grade:

Abrahamic Religions Brochures: The 6th grade is using web resources and Pages software to create brochures highlighting what they are learning in their study of the three Abrahamic religions. We will post samples as they become available.

Fifth Grade

Mixed Age Group

Lab Services

The Technology Department is charged with operating two computer labs, (one for both the Lower and Middle Schools), as well as supporting the labs of the Music and Language departments and research stations in the Frank Perrine Library. Each of these areas is equipped with enough computers for a full class to work simultaneously and throughout the year play host to classes, teacher workshops, activities, and other student presentations.
